Microsoft Tag or Standard QR Code?

I’ve got an upcoming project and am having a hard time deciding between which technology to use here.

At first glance I thought that Microsoft’s Tag would just be another closed technology to deal with and felt like it just fragments the mainstream adoption of a standardized (and open) QR reader.

After a bit of experimentation I realize that Microsoft Tag gives me:

    - Higher Chance of Working

    - Better Tracking/Analytics Reports

    - Customization of the Design

-Smaller Footprint (More accurate at smaller sizes that Standard QR Codes)

And several other advantages.. but why do I still feel uneasy about going this route?

Is it because I’m hoping the rumors about Facebook utilizing QR Codes will be true, thus creating more awareness/usage of the QR technology with their user base of 450million+ and growing? Imagine of the Facebook mobile app included a QR Readers.   Google has already jumped on board.  Could this really mean mainstream for QR?

Is it because I feel a bit dirty limiting consumers to a proprietary reader? Or that I’m afraid smartphones will soon all include embedded reader software, that will most likely be QR based and not MS Tag (Windows Mobile Excluded)  I am impressed with the growing list of Supported platforms/devices for the MS Tag Reader.. but it still isn’t an OPEN technology.

Does anyone have code scan data to show usage between the two?

I realize there are several other things to discuss here, but I need to send a design for a kiosk to a printer in a few hours, and at the end of the day just want a technology that gives me flexibility but mainly allows for the opportunity for consumers to be able to scan and access something that helps them out and extends their experience with the product I represent.

Anyone out there have any thoughts?

Webmaster & Photographer / Office of the Governor - Texas

The governor of America’s second largest state deserves a Web site that reflects his strong personality and clear vision for the state.

At the invitation of his senior staff, I accepted the challenge of replacing his antiquated site with an intuitively-designed, multi-layered vehicle for his message. In the process, I integrated more than 15,000 pages of detailed information culled from a number of related offices including the Press Office, Economic Development & Tourism, the Texas Music Office, Texas Film Commission, and others.

-While continually updating and upgrading the site, I also traveled frequently with the Governor, taking photos & videos, managing live streaming of press events and other duties in support of the Governor’s message.
  • Feb 2006 - Nov 2006

Web Administrator / Texas A&M University- Office of Admissions

In the remarkably competitive world of college admissions, schools can’t merely keep up, they must lead. In this role, I applied my skills in user-experience design to bridge the gap between our state’s finest university and prospective students of increasingly sophisticated technical ability. The launch of a more modern website that interacts with prospective students rather than just serving as a digital bulletin board of information led to an immediate rise in web traffic and applicants.
